“Non-toxic” is a marketing phrase, not a standard

No agency certifies cookware as non-toxic. There is no test a pan passes. Any brand may print the words on any product, and most now do.

That does not make the phrase meaningless — it means you have to read what sits underneath it. Some brands name the specific compounds they exclude. Some say “without intentionally added” and mean something narrower than it sounds. At least one major nonstick brand states plainly that its pan contains PFAS. This page shows you how to tell which is which.

Four words, and what each one actually covers

Most confusion in this category comes from treating four different terms as synonyms. They are not, and the gaps between them are exactly where marketing lives.

PFAS is the broad family — per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, thousands of compounds. It is the widest of the four terms. A claim of “no PFAS” is the strongest of the four claims, because everything below is a subset of it.

PTFE is one specific PFAS compound, the one sold as Teflon. It is what the nonstick surface on a conventional nonstick pan is made of. “PTFE-free” is narrower than “PFAS-free”: a pan can contain no PTFE and still contain other PFAS.

PFOA was a processing aid historically used to manufacture PTFE. It has been phased out of cookware manufacturing, which means “PFOA-free” is close to meaningless as a differentiator in 2026 — it is true of essentially every pan sold. When a brand leads with PFOA-free and says nothing about PFAS, that ordering is a choice.

“Without intentionally added” is the hedge to watch. It says the manufacturer did not add the compound on purpose. It does not say the finished product was tested and none was found. It is a statement about intent, not about the pan in the box. It is not dishonest — it is a narrower claim than a flat “no PFAS”, and brands that use it have usually chosen it deliberately.

What each brand actually publishes

This is the part that is worth your attention, because it is verifiable and it is not what the advertising suggests. Each line below is what the brand states on its own site, read 25 August 2026 — not our summary of it.

Two of these deserve a second look. Le Creuset's line is the most transparent sentence any brand in this table has written: a premium company stating in plain English that its nonstick pan contains PFAS, because that is what makes it nonstick. It is not a scandal. It is a disclosure, and it is more useful to a buyer than a hedge.

All-Clad is the opposite case, and it is important to be careful here. We could not find a PFAS claim on All-Clad's site for the HA1 line. Absence of a claim is not evidence of presence. It means the company has not said, and we are not going to say on its behalf.

The materials, ranked by how little you have to trust anyone

If the claims are what worry you, the cleanest answer is to buy a material that has no coating to make claims about. Ranked by how much you have to take a brand's word for it:

Stainless steel, cast iron, carbon steel, enamelled cast iron. No nonstick coating exists, so there is nothing to be PFAS-free about. Enamel is glass fused to iron — it is not a nonstick coating, which is why an enamelled Dutch oven and a nonstick pan are not comparable products even when they cost the same. The trade-off is real: food sticks more, and you manage that with heat and fat rather than with chemistry.

Coating-free titanium. The newest category, and the strongest position on paper — if there is no coating, there is nothing to wear off. Our Place's Titanium Always Pan Pro is the mainstream example, rated to 1000°F and safe with metal utensils and the dishwasher. It is also the most expensive way into the category.

Ceramic (sol-gel) nonstick. This is what Our Place, Caraway and GreenPan all sell. It is genuinely not PTFE. The honest caveat, which the category does not advertise: ceramic nonstick loses its slip faster than PTFE does. You are trading longevity for a different chemistry, and most owners replace ceramic pans sooner than they expected.

PTFE nonstick. The most effective nonstick surface and the longest-lasting. It is also PFAS by definition. Used below its temperature limit it is regarded as stable; the risk discussion is about overheating an empty pan. If that trade is one you are comfortable with, say so honestly rather than buying a hedge.

Five questions that separate a real claim from a good one

1. Does it say PFAS, or only PTFE and PFOA? PFAS is the family. If a brand names only the two subsets, ask why the broad word is missing.

2. Is there an “intentionally added” in the sentence? That phrase narrows the claim from the product to the manufacturer's intent.

3. Is there testing behind it, or only a statement? Published third-party lab results are a different class of evidence from a marketing line. Very few brands publish them.

4. Does the claim cover the whole product or just the cooking surface? Handles, rivets, lids and accessories are parts of the pan too.

5. What is the warranty? This is the underrated one. A ceramic coating that fails in eighteen months on a one-year warranty is a more likely real-world problem than the chemistry is. Warranties in this category run from one year to lifetime, and the spread is not correlated with price.

What this page cannot tell you, and where it came from

This page is about what manufacturers publish and how to read it. It is not toxicology, and it does not tell you what any of these compounds does in a human body — that is a question for published health research and for your doctor, not for a cookware site.

It also cannot tell you whether any specific pan on a shop shelf contains what its label says. We have not commissioned laboratory testing. Where a brand publishes third-party results, we say so; where a brand makes a claim without testing, we say that instead.

Every quoted claim above was read from the brand's own website on 25 August 2026. Manufacturers revise this wording — it is some of the most-edited copy on any cookware site — so if a claim matters to your purchase, read it yourself before you buy.
