Our Place Cast Iron Always Pan review: the same $135, a completely different pan

The short version. The Cast Iron Always Pan costs exactly what the ceramic 10.5-inch costs — $135 — and shares almost nothing with it. It is enamelled cast iron, 8.75 lb with its lid against 3.9, rated to 500°F and the broiler uncovered (425°F with the lid), induction compatible, and covered by a limited lifetime warranty against the ceramic pan's three years. It holds 1.9 quarts — less than the ceramic's 2.6 — because the body is shallower, 2.25 inches against 2.8. The box adds silicone Hot Grips to the glass lid and beechwood spatula. Buy it for searing, the oven and the broiler, and for a pan with no coating to wear out. Do not buy it as a lighter or easier version of anything.

What is actually good

500°F and a broiler. “Oven and broiler safe up to 500°F without lid” is Our Place's wording. The ceramic Always Pan stops at 450°F and Our Place says nothing about broiling it. Below $150, this is the only Always Pan you can finish under the element.

No coating to wear out, and a warranty to match. The interior is “black matte enameled cast iron” with a glossy enamel exterior. There is no nonstick layer to protect, and Our Place warrants the pan for life — limited, original purchaser — rather than for three years. The terms are on Our Place warranty and returns.

The fullest box in the range. The pan, a “modular, high-visibility, steam-release glass lid”, a nesting beechwood spatula and “custom silicone Hot Grips”. The grips are Our Place's acknowledgement that the handles of an 8.75 lb cast iron pan get hot — the page says so: “Gets hot! Be careful and use oven mitts or Hot Grips when handling.”

Induction, stated. “Compatible with all cooktops, including induction.”

What nobody mentions

8.75 lb with the lid. 2.2 times the ceramic 10.5-inch at 3.9 lb and 1.9 times the titanium 10.5-inch at 4.6. That is the ordinary weight of enamelled cast iron, not a flaw — but it is a two-hand pan, and the Hot Grips exist for a reason.

1.9 quarts. Less than the ceramic 10.5-inch's 2.6, because the body is 2.25 inches deep rather than 2.8. For braising, the Perfect Pot or the 12.5-inch ceramic holds more. This is a skillet.

425°F with the lid on. The lid is the limit, not the pan. If you want the 500°F rating or the broiler, cook uncovered.

“Pre-seasoned” is in the page title, not on the page. Our Place's title tag and meta description call it a pre-seasoned skillet. The body copy never mentions seasoning; it describes an enamelled interior and says a patina develops with use. Go by the body copy and the care card in the box.

10.5 in the name, 10.79 in the specifications. Our Place's own measurement. The ceramic 10.5-inch measures 10.7. Neither is 10.5.

Dishwasher: “not recommended”. “Hand wash once the pan is fully cooled”; “deep clean with boiling water and a sprinkle of baking soda”; “avoid using scours and abrasive cleaning agents”; “always use high smoke point oils”. All Our Place's words. The ceramic and titanium rules are different, and all three are on how to clean the Always Pan.
